Want to train your puppy? These are the 3 First Commands You Need to Teach – Why ‘Out’ Could Save You Trouble.

Every dog owner asks the same question: where do I start? With so many commands and training tips online, it is easy to get overwhelmed. The truth is, you only need three commands to build a reliable foundation: Recall, Place, and Out.

The “Here” command

Recall is the single most important command for safety. Teaching your dog to come when called can prevent accidents, stop dangerous chases, and give you peace of mind on walks. A reliable recall is not optional.

The “Place” command

Place teaches your dog to settle on command. It builds impulse control, calmness, and respect for boundaries. Place training is invaluable for managing excitement around visitors, children, or daily household chaos.

Out is the command that too many owners overlook, and yet it may be the most powerful. Out teaches your dog to release toys, food, or objects on cue. Without it, possessiveness can become dangerous. I learned this firsthand when working with Obi, a 4-year-old German Shepherd who had developed possession issues over a ball. In his drive, he accidentally bit me because he could not wait for me to throw it. That moment drove home how critical the “Out” command is for safety and clarity.

Arguably the most important one: The “Out”.

Teaching Out from puppyhood prevents uncontrolled possessiveness and avoids conflict. It also builds trust between dog and handler, showing the dog that letting go is always rewarded. Combined with Recall and Place, you now have the tools to manage excitement, control drive, and keep your dog safe in real-world situations.
