Dog Training Explained (Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow)
Have you ever wondered why your dog does what it does, or doesn’t?
If your dog pulls on the lead, ignores recall, or reacts to other dogs or people, it’s easy to think something is wrong.
It isn’t.
Your dog is doing exactly what works. Dogs repeat behaviours that improve their situation. If something creates a better outcome, they’ll do it again. If it doesn’t, they’ll drop it.
That’s the foundation of all dog behaviour and dog training.
1. Why Dogs Pull on the Lead
What’s happening: Your dog pulls → you follow → the walk continues.
What your dog learns: Pulling works.
From your dog’s perspective, leash pressure is a small cost. The reward is forward movement, new smells, and access to the environment. So pulling becomes the most efficient strategy.
This is why loose lead walking doesn’t improve with time alone. It improves when the outcome changes.
2. Why Dogs Become Reactive
What’s happening: Your dog barks or lunges → you create distance → you reassure them.
What your dog learns: Reactivity works.
The scary thing goes away. They feel safer. They often get comfort from you. That behaviour has just been reinforced.
This is how fear-based reactivity develops and strengthens over time, especially in working-line dogs like German Shepherds and Malinois.
3. Why Your Dog Ignores Recall
What’s happening: You call your dog → they stay engaged with something better (a scent, another dog, the environment).
What your dog learns: Ignoring you works.
If coming back consistently ends the fun, and staying out keeps the reward, your dog is making the correct decision by ignoring you.
This isn’t disobedience. It’s logic.
How to Fix It: Change the Outcome
Dog training isn’t about repeating commands louder or more often. It’s about changing the consequences of behaviour.
To fix pulling, reactivity, or poor recall:
- Remove the reward for the wrong behaviour
- Make the right behaviour more valuable
- Create clarity so the dog understands what works and what doesn’t
A balanced training approach does exactly that. Clear communication creates understanding. Consistent reinforcement creates reliability.
