What Is NePoPo®

NePoPo® is a modern training system built on structure, fairness, and clear communication: pressure, release, reward. It teaches dogs that their choices matter — and with the right guidance, it can transform chaos into clarity. For Pluto, it was the breakthrough we needed.

NePoPo® is a modern dog training system developed by Bart and Michael Bellon. The name stands for Negative, Positive, Positive and it describes a clear learning sequence: pressure, release, reward.

It is a structured way of communicating with the dog that teaches them that their behaviour has power. Through their choices they learn to turn pressure off and make good things happen.

The learning sequence

Negative: The handler applies light, fair pressure. This is not punishment. It is information.

Positive: The moment the dog makes the correct choice, the pressure is released.

Positive: The dog is then rewarded with food, a toy, praise, or in the real world, access to that world itself such as the freedom to move, explore, or interact.

Over time the dog learns that effort and good decisions make life better. That understanding builds confidence, engagement, and reliability even in the face of distractions.

What pressure means

In NePoPo®, pressure can take many forms depending on the dog and the situation. It could be slight leash tension or a few taps, low-level e collar stimulation, or even a gentle hand on the dog’s bum to guide a sit. That too is pressure.

What matters most is that it is always fair, clear, and proportionate. The goal is to apply the minimum effective dose needed for the dog to understand the communication.

Pressure is never meant to frighten or overpower the dog. It is feedback, nothing more. When used properly it builds confidence and clarity rather than fear or avoidance.

Starting with Po training

Every behaviour in NePoPo® starts with what we call Po training, which means pure positive reinforcement. The dog learns what a behaviour means through luring, shaping, and reward.

Only once the dog clearly understands what is expected do we layer in light, fair pressure. Pressure is never used to teach. It is used to confirm understanding and make the behaviour reliable in any situation. It is simply another form of communication, not a shortcut.

My story with Pluto

When I first adopted Pluto, life was chaos. He had energy, intelligence, and no off switch, but unfortunately also low drives, meaning he was not willing to work for anything. That made him extremely hard to train reliably for real-world situations.

I bought several courses, did endless research online, and worked with well-known force free trainers. But I was not getting results. Their answer was always the same: I would just have to manage him.

That was not good enough. Living with him was near impossible. We even considered bringing him back at one point. But we could not do it. Several families had already failed him. Someone had to put in the work.

Then I came across a podcast about NePoPo® training, and something about the structure and fairness made sense. I enrolled in the NePoPo® Silver School, and it completely changed how I saw training.

For the first time I had a framework that actually worked for Pluto. He began to understand that his choices mattered. Better decisions led to better outcomes. Progress was slow, but it was steady, and it was fair.

Later I followed up with a three day hands-on seminar with Hans Verbruggen, who trains dogs for special forces and police units all over the world. That experience helped me refine my timing, pressure application, and clarity, and it taught me what true fairness in training looks like.

Why I believe in it

NePoPo® works, but it demands good timing and fairness from the handler. Pressure, markers, and release all have to be precise. Poor timing or unclear signals can confuse the dog rather than help them learn.

Anyone interested in using the system should do so with professional guidance. When applied correctly it creates calm, consistent communication between dog and handler. When done poorly it becomes noise.

Final thoughts

NePoPo® is not about being harsh and it is not about being permissive either. It is about clarity, accountability, and understanding.

For Pluto and me, it turned chaos into structure and gave us a way forward that was both effective and humane. Pressure, release, reward. A simple concept, but when applied with fairness, it can completely transform how a dog learns and how a handler communicates.
