(Spoiler: It’s not about money.)
When people ask about the cost of living with a dog, they usually mean money, food, vet bills, insurance, training equipment. But when it comes to working breeds like Malinois, Dutch Shepherds, or German Shepherds, the real cost isn’t financial. It’s the life you give up and the lifestyle you must adopt.
Before the dogs
Before I got my dogs, I went to the gym four times a week and cycled almost every day. I averaged 12 to 15 hours of training a week — sometimes close to 20. My life revolved around improving my own performance.
Then came the dogs: first one, then two; both from serious working lines. And everything changed.
High drive means high maintenance
You don’t fit a working dog into your schedule, you schedule around them. Their needs come first, because they don’t switch off. These dogs are wired to work, and if you don’t give them a job, they’ll invent one: usually something you won’t like.
Training, engagement, play, decompression, structure, and clear boundaries aren’t optional extras. They’re the bare minimum to keep a high-drive dog balanced and fulfilled.
Owning a Malinois or Dutch Shepherd means living a structured, disciplined life — whether you feel like it or not.
You either go all in, or don’t go at all
If you try to live your old life and just “add” a Malinois or Dutch Shepherd to it, you’ll both end up frustrated. These breeds aren’t hobbies; they’re lifestyles. You either go all in, or you don’t go at all.
For me, the trade-off has been worth it. My days are more structured, more demanding, but also more meaningful. The bond you build when you meet a dog’s needs at this level is hard to describe, it’s built on work, trust, and consistency.
But it’s not for everyone. If you don’t want to live the lifestyle: early mornings, constant training, limited downtime, and daily discipline; then these are the last breeds you should be looking at.
The lifestyle test
Owning a working breed isn’t just owning a dog. It’s committing to a way of life. Before you take that leap, ask yourself one honest question: Do you want the dog, or the lifestyle that comes with it?
